works greatAug 29, 2010 The material used for construction is a bit thinner than I was expecting but it seems to be OK. For mounting, I use a 3/4 plumbing pipe fitted with a floor flange because the pole that is supplied with this feeder is very weak. As to squirrel proof - perhaps the squirrels that live in my yard are not as advanced as in other parts of the country, but they have not figured out how to get to the food - other than that which the birds drop on the ground. Before I bought this feeder, the squirrels could empty my feeder in one day. I use the strongest setting for the springs without any problem. The only problem I have noticed is that the metal perch is quite slippery - perhaps it's good for squirrel proofing but a bit tough for the birds. I'm thinking about painting a thin coat of silicon calk on the perch but, for now, I am enjoying watching the birds - not the squirrels.
Does not Work for StarlingsAug 04, 2010 We bought this to keep squirrels and starlings away - the starlings are so smart they can figure out how to feed on it.
It's very good, but not squirrel proofJul 23, 2010 I replaced a plastic bird feeder with this metal one. The squirrels discovered my plastic bird feeder and started to gnaw away at it. This bird feeder was advertised as squirrel proof. It's a high quality bird feeder, but it isn't squirrel proof. Squirrels are so acrobatic that they can hang from the top of the feeder, eat the bird seed and not trigger the mechanism that closes the feeder sides. I'm happy with the feeder, but am making these comments in the interest of full disclosure.
Great feeder!Jul 14, 2010 It took the black birds about 3 days to figure out they needed to move on. The squirrels are still hanging around, but provide only comic relief now. It's a joy to see several different birds sharing the same feeder.
THIS WORKS GREAT!!Jul 09, 2010 THIS FEEDER WORKS GREAT!! I WAS MORE CONCERNED ABOUT STOPPING GRACKLES AND BLACKBIRDS THAN SQUIRRELS, BUT IT WORKS FOR BOTH. THE BLACKBIRDS AND GRACKLES DON'T EVEN BOTHER TO GO NEAR IT ANYMORE!! I HAVE MINE ON A HANGER,NOT A POLE, SO IT HAS ALSO DEFEATED THE SQUIRRELS. THE SMALL BIRDS LOVE IT,AND SEVERAL CAN GET ON IT WITHOUT CLOSING THE PORTS. I LOVE THAT YOU CAN SET THE WEIGHT TO WHAT YOU WANT. IT IS TRUE THAT THE BLACKBIRDS CAN PERCH ON THE SIDE OF IT RATHER THAN ON THE BAR, BUT IT IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR THEM, SO THEY TRY IT ONCE OR TWICE, THEN DON'T BOTHER.
