Great, but:Sep 01, 2010 This is a great feeder but it needs a few modifications to make it excellent.
1. As stated in previous a review, the window showing the seeds is behind the metal frame, giving birds and squirrels a place for a foothold. Once they discover this they shift their weight from the perch bar to the feeder preventing the protection gate from closing. The clear plastic window should be located outside the metal frame to prevent this. A home fix is to place clear packing tape over the frame and windows creating a semi-smooth surface that's more difficult to grip.
2. The design of the balance bar itself provides a place for the critters to shift their weight more to the center. This allows the smart critters to defeat the protection gate. A factory fix would be to make this a 'U' shape from the balance pivot point to the perch bar.
3. The rear of the balance bar provides a perch for the birds. As each bird lands it effects the balance of the system and allows larger animals to feed without closing the feed window. Placing the bar closer to the feeder, or under, and adding additional weight would reduce this.
Over all, my feeder has a family of Cardinals, a pack of Wrens, and Sparrows feeding daily. There are also a few Blackbirds and Pigeons that try to feed and are only successful when another bird lands on the rear bar. Hopefully the manufacturer will reach this same conclusion and make the changes. I'm going to keep checking so I can get one of the first.
Starling and Squirrel ProofAug 04, 2010 We've tried lot of different feeders to keep not only the squirrels but the starlings/grackles away. This is the only feeder that worked for the starlings due to the way it can be adjusted. We love this feeder.
Replaced one that we had for 5 years. Not squirrel proofJul 21, 2010 Came before order delivery date. Once I got rid of the crossbar the squirrels have not been in the feeder. Not to say that they have not tried everywitch way.
Great FeederJun 16, 2010
Great quality construction, easy to fill with seed. It was hilarious watching the squirrels try to climb the post and figure this thing out. They finally just gave up and now can only come by and snatch up the seeds (on the ground) that the birds drop while feeding. Have had it up almost a month now and this thing is really saving $$ on my bird feed bill!!
Great bird feederJun 12, 2010 The birds love the feeder....no more big black birds, they feed from the ground. I am very please with the look.
