5Excellent Squirrel Proof Bird FeederMar 05, 2010
Purchased this feeder in an attempt to prevent the squirrels from eating all the cracked sunflower seeds (they are quite expensive and the birds like them) and discovered... IT WORKS GREAT!! It is entertaining to watch the squirrels try and figure out hoe to get into the feeder. I am wishing that it be 'bear proof' as well... as spring is fast approaching and the bears will looking for some easy eats! It is heavy and seems very strong but not bear proof. Just need to remove the feeder from the area at night! All in all, works great and defeats the best squirrels eating efforts! It is very easy to install (even a caveman can do it!) The only downside... it is a bit pricey, but I guess you get what you pay for.

5Really keeps squirrels awayJan 30, 2010
Just purchased as a replacement for one that is at least 15 years old. What began to give out was the ability to adjust for bird weight. It began to rust and would stick open. It really does keep the squirrels out and larger birds if you so desire. Easy to put together but I prefer the old feeders method for connecting to the post, more secure and long lasting. But I still recommend feeder. A long time ago I replaced the wooded bird perch, squirrels chewed through it, with a steel rod as a perch. I used small reinforcing rod. Worked great.

5Long Term UserDec 03, 2009
I've had one of these feeders long enough that mine was made before they added the clear windows...I'm guessing 15 years, maybe a little more. I've watched many a squirrel become frustrated and give up. In my opinion it IS squirrel proof. You just have to adjust it properly and that comes with a trade off. Ours was set so that anything bigger than a cardinal or more than a few chickadees would drop the cover because our birds are pigs. I don't know what a few chickadees weigh but I never saw a squirrel find a way to put any part of it's body on the bar without closing the cover. The trade off...you will not be able to feed as many birds at one time, but in my opinion thats not really a trade off. If you check out the pics showing a squirrel on the feeder you will notice the counter balance is set at the maximum. My guess is this is the cause of the problem some people are having with squirrels.

In response to those who say it spills a lot of seed. I might agree...and might not. When we feed a seed mix out of the feeder our birds will knock out the smaller seed to get at the oily sunflower seeds, so we had a good bit on the ground. Of course the ground feeding birds like this but it makes a little bit of a mess and the squirrels would feast on these seeds. When we feed oily sunflower seed exclusively the only thing we find on the ground are cracked shells.

After all these years ours did wear out. The wooden perch never fell out, but the birds claws have worn one side down to the point that it's only half as thick as it was when new. That's not what did ours in though. The hole for the hinge that holds the feeding bar and counter balance rusted and now the bar won't move up or down. To be fair though, although we only feed in the winter, it's been left outdoors the entire time.

Finally, I like it enough that I'm ordering my second one. Anyone so unhappy with theirs they want to part with it...shoot me an email.

5Wow this thing works!Sep 12, 2009
I used to be out there four and five times a week to fill my old feeder. Every critter in the area came and emptied the feeder, the black birds were the worst driving all the smaller birds away. No more, set the new bird feeder to 2. Now the smaller birds get to eat, I don't have to fill the feeder but once every 8 to 10 days. A great buy thank-you. TJM

The squirrels did a number on my old birdfeeder, and I needed a new one...The birds were almost knocking on my door, wondering what happened and where was their beloved feeder..LOL....I went on Amazon, best in the world, and found one, I thought looked similar to the old one...It was delivered in 3 days, love that.......The feeder was exact except it was now double the size of old one...Love it, up and keeping the birds happy......Thank you Amazon, I am always satisfied in your service and use you for everything...Xmas is on it's way and again I will use your service like last year.....Thank You
