great value for money!Mar 08, 2010 I bought this heater at the beginning of the 2009 winter. It does what it needs to do! It works fantastically, even under the boatloads of snow that we got this winter: it melts its way out of the snow, even when the snow was 16 " deep. I had it in a terra cotta saucer (a flower pot saucer), weighted down with stones, and sitting on the ground. I did need a long extension cord. The birds don't seem to mind the shine of the silver covering, nor the stones. They seemed happy with it, and I found it easy to refill by piling snow on top of the saucer. I would agree with other reviewers that it seems cheaply made (the reason for my 4 rather than 5 stars) but its performance has been top notch.
excellentFeb 27, 2010 This product works exactly as stated. Could not be happier with it. Intend to order another one for my daughters house where I have bird feeders and a waterer there. Thank you so much.

Economical but easily damagedFeb 24, 2010 I bought this for the bird bath on my deck this winter. I'm in the Northeast, so most winter nights are 10 degrees (F) or lower. It does need to be held down by a rock or something heavy, and the short cord required an outdoor extension cord. The problem is that other wildlife started dropping by, like squirrels and raccoons, and they seem to have chewed or pawed it. It continued to work for a month after they discovered the water and started messing with the de-icer, but eventually it gave up. All the wires are individually wrapped, and I was impressed that it didn't actually electrocute the animals, considering how the foil was destroyed. I don't blame the manufacturer, but I will not be ordering another one. I'll go for one built into a bird bath or in a more indestructible form.
However if you don't have critters other than birds at your bath, I would highly recommend it. It didn't seem to make much of an impact on my electric bill, and did fine until it was shredded. Even then it died safely, without endangering me or the animals. It works very well at keeping the ice at bay, but does not melt snow.
birdbath heater at a fabulous price!Feb 12, 2010 I have seen this product for almost twice the price it is here. It heats up in seconds - you will need a three-pronged outdoor extension cord to use it. It takes up almost no space in the birdbath, and keeps the water warm so birds have a source of both drinking and bath water in freezing weather. The package was damaged in transit by the U.S. Postal service; I ordered two of them, and one worked and the other did not. No problem, as I requested a replacement which arrived before I had sent the other one back! Give this a try - the birds will love you.
happy birdsFeb 12, 2010 this heater works well in the coldest part of this country ... freezing day and night in the UP of Michigan .... it never failed us and our birds are happy ... drinking and bathing .... we just put it in a plastic flowerpot-plate and refill it every day.
